Meet the Humans who have shaped the SALTO Network

The SALTO Network celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2025, as the first SALTO was established at the Millennium. For the occasion, the Network invited one special person from the history of each of the 11 SALTO Resource Centres to tell the story of their organisation. Look at how the Network supporting E+ and ESC was shaped and responded to the emerging and changing needs of NAs and beneficiaries

Every 5 years at the SALTO Network we do have some reasons to celebrate – the SALTO network is getting older, more experienced and well-seasoned! Like all things in life there are plenty of reasons to be grateful, happy, and a bit nostalgic when looking back.

So what makes a network? It is all the wonderful humans that make it happen! With the ideas, aspirations, work, dedication, humour, and learning moments are all what helped SALTO learn and grow. With that learning came inspiration from the famous „Humans of New York” photography project (HoNY); a mammoth task to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers in their daily lives. Somewhere along the way HoNY also began to interview subjects, and so all the portraits and accompanying stories became the subject of a vibrant blog, and a source of many social media spin-offs as well as  two great books.

In that spirit, “Humans of SALTO” is a tribute to people who have helped us to support education, training and youth work in Europe. We are grateful for the countless helping hands who have made „us” possible.

"SALTO E&T TCA - Kriszta Molnar

SALTO E&T TCA was the first SALTO in the field of education and training. It arrived in a reality, where the youth SALTOs were already there for more than 15 years.

There was a  'wall’ between the youth and education and training fields. It seemed fully artificial to me as we work for the same goal, we share the same values, all the sectors can offer something for the other, so I hoped – together with many colleagues – that the sectors can work in a closer cooperation. Today, I believe that the wall is breaking down and we – in the SALTO family – are mutually ready to learn from each other and respect the values of both fields."

SALTO Inclusion & Diversity in E&T  - Josip Lusa

"SALTO was in the beginning more like a buzzword that would pop up now and then, but not all project officers had a clear understanding of its role or activities.

At that time, inclusion and diversity, for example, were mostly seen as a priority relevant for the youth sector. The general mindset in the VET field was that we were there to focus on vocational competencies, not on the broader social issues that SALTOs were advocating for. However, things shifted when inclusion and diversity were made a horizontal priority in 2021."

SALTO Green - Sébastien Thierry

We came to play an active part in defining the contours of the transversal priority „Environment and fight against climate change”. When the Commission published the call for applications for SALTO 'Green’, it was natural that the Agency should be involved.

Our application was accepted in 2022, and the SALTO Green resource centre has now been up and running for the last 3 years.

SALTO Participation & Information - Martii Martinson

The Centre’s inaugural year of operation was very much dominated by fine tuning the vision of the new centre that was presented to the European Commission; being present to make our name and faces known in as many places as possible but also to hit the ground running whilst not wasting any time. One of the early goals we scored that also determined the many future successes of SALTO Participation and Information was the amazing bunch of humans within the new Think Tank.
