Opening Windows of Opportunity: establishing learning networks and school partnerships serving migrating children in Europe through international education
Summary of TCA outcomes
In the past decade, primary school classroom demographics in larger European cities have changed remarkably. This change is the result of increasing mobility, globalisation and conflict driven displacement, and has required adaptation at many levels of society. Some national curriculums have made noteworthy efforts to tailor to a more multilingual, multicultural and pluriliterate student population, while others are yet to take the leap.
In this Training & Cooperation Activity (TCA), the Dutch National Agency Erasmus+ Education & Training, in cooperation with the Bridging the Education Gap Foundation, provided a platform for discussion on suitable educational approaches for migrant and refugee children in terms of language, curriculum, global citizenship, inclusion and the needs for the 21st century primary school classroom.
Serving as backdrop for the discussion was a local case study from The Hague, the Netherlands, where a public school enriched the national curriculum with the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme. Situated in one of the most complex and diverse neighbourhoods in the city, the school became a learning hub for education in underserved communities. The inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework is proving to be a welcome transition to more student-centred, inclusive education.
Around 100 participants from 12 countries took part in the programme, with panel discussions, information blocks and school visits to 5 schools in the area. The professional production team created a unique aftermovie about the event. All participants also have access to a padlet with presentations, photos, interesting websites and networking opportunities.
