Fostering basic skills in adulthood: building bridges to improved employability and active citizenship
Main Info
TCA Description
The development of basic skills in adult students is gaining importance in education given its direct relationship with the capacity for innovation and future competitiveness of a society
The development of these basic skills makes even more sense in adult education, given the limitations that in many cases this type of students have, especially working adults, with time constraints and work and family responsibilities, as well as older people who want to continue lifelong learning.
In addition, according to several international surveys many EU countries are seeing a decrease in levels of basic skills among adult students, one more reason to support the reinforcement of basic skills for adults.
The 2025 Union of Skills is the European Commission’s strategy to address the skills and labour gaps across the EU.
The strategy includes an Action Plan on Basic Skills that sets out short- to medium-term steps for the EU and EU countries to improve basic reading, mathematics, science, digital and citizenship skills and promote excellence, from early years through all stages of school education and in adult learning.
Following this strategy, this TCA seeks to support the Adult Education sector by strengthening the basic life skills of learners. To this end, we will encourage the sharing of strategies and good practices for the development of these life skills.
